Cupping therapy has been used in Chinese Medicine for a very long time, as early as 3,000 BC. Cupping was also used by Egyptians 1500 BC, by ancient Greeks 400 BC. Then it was introduced to Asia and Europe. Cupping is a regular medical procedure in Russia. Many people have cups at home for a natural home treatment during colds and other respiratory conditions to help with lung congestion. Medical professionals are trained during their study and then use it at work on patients to prevent infections after surgeries and treatment of lung diseases like bronchitis and pneumonia. In Chinese medicine, cupping is used to dispel stagnation of blood and lymph, increase qi flow, and release toxins.

During cupping procedure, vacuum is created, a suction effect to pull the skin into the cup, which helps to move blood and separate fascia layers of the skin and around muscles, working a similar way as massage therapy. If cups are used stationary – they are left on for about 5-15 minutes. Cupping shows good results with pains and aches, muscle scar tissues, swellings. In Chinese medicine cupping is used for back, neck pains, stiff muscles, migraines, anxiety, and fatigue. ”It is one of the best” deep-tissue therapy, able to affect tissue up to 4” deep, according to Chinese medicine.

After cupping, red circles will remain and normally disappear within 3 days to a week, sometimes longer if a person is very sick or sedentary. Color and pattern of marks depend on level of stagnation in the treated area. It can vary from bright red to dark purple.
